When taken in moderation, CBD as a supplement has excellent health benefits such as combatting anxiety or treating PTSD and can improve your overall quality of life. It comes in multiple forms, like cream, pills, or other oral ingestion methods.

Today’s blog includes nine benefits of taking CBD as a supplement. Keep reading to learn more about CBD and how it can help you.

About CBD

Before we dive into the health benefits of CBD, we want to explain what CBD is and how it works. CBD is short for cannabidiol and is extracted from the Cannabis Sativa plant. It’s an oil that is then mixed with an inert carrier oil like hemp seed oil.

While CBD comes from the marijuana plant, it lacks tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), the psychoactive ingredient that gives you a high. So, you can take CBD supplements before driving or working without worry.

Because it has health benefits without the high, CBD has become very popular. What started as an oil is now available in pill, cream, and gummy format and in foods like CBD-infused potato chips.

Mental Health

CBD is known for its calming effects. Individuals suffering from anxiety and depression often take CBD to achieve a higher level of calm than they can naturally maintain. CBD can help with more than just anxiety and depression, too.

It helps with drowsiness, agitation, insomnia, headaches, and more. It doesn’t have the same risks for substance abuse or addiction as other mental health treatments, making it an ideal treatment option for many individuals.

Seizures

CBD won’t cure seizures, but it’s been proven to treat them in some instances. In recent years, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved Epidiolex to treat seizures stemming from Lennox-Gastaut and Dravet syndromes. Epidiolex contains CBD. The medication was approved for patients who were at least two years old.

PTSD Symptoms

Many trials have been conducted to see how effective CBD can be for treating PTSD symptoms. Whether you’re a soldier returning from war or you’re suffering from traumatic experiences causing post-traumatic stress, you’ll want to experience some relief from your symptoms.

The Journal of Alternative and Complementary Medicine conducted a study with 11 individuals with PTSD. They were receiving outpatient treatment in an eight-week program. Some were given a placebo, while others were given CBD pills.

Those who received the CBD pills reported fewer PTSD symptoms than those given the placebo. In addition to using CBD to treat your PTSD, it’s a good idea also to utilize other forms of treatment, such as therapy.

Opioid Addiction

Many studies have shown that CBD helps with opioid dependence, specifically cue-induced cravings, withdrawal anxiety, resting heart rate, and salivary cortisol levels.

Not only did CBD help, but it didn’t cause any adverse effects. CBD can also help with pain, anxiety, and insomnia, often key reasons for becoming dependent on opioids. So, it treats the symptoms and root causes of opioid addiction.

As more studies are run, we’ll learn more about how CBD helps opioid addiction.

ALS Symptoms

Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, also known as ALS, is a disease that deteriorates brain and spinal cord nerve cells, handicapping the individual. Researchers haven’t entirely figured out what causes ALS, but they know it’s hereditary.

There’s no cure for ALS, but a couple of medications can help treat the symptoms, providing the patient with some relief.

Treatment with a combination of THC and CBD has been the most effective for ALS symptoms. The dosage varies based on how severe the symptoms are. The therapy helps with muscle tightness and stiffness.

Pain

There are levels of pain. But here, we are referring to the kind of chronic pain you can’t get under control, like intense pain, a horrible cold feeling, and uncontrollable itching.

Canada approved a mouth spray that contained equal parts THC and CBD for pain related to multiple sclerosis (MS) and cancer. CBD also effectively treats chronic pain that doesn’t stem from cancer.

For chronic pain, a topical CBD cream is recommended. Keeping it out of the bloodstream keeps symptoms to a minimum.

Complications from Diabetes

CBD helps with high glucose levels, lowering your risk of diabetes. If you already have diabetes, CBD can help with resistin levels and glucose-dependent insulinotropic peptides, both of which play significant roles in diabetes.

Resistin is what inhibits our bodies from regulating our sugar levels, and insulinotropic peptides regulate that enough insulin is released from our food once it’s been digested.

CBD is a natural, plant-based way to alleviate some diabetic symptoms.

Neurological Disease Prevention

CBD has antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. Inflammation is responsible for many pathological conditions like Parkinson’s disease, Alzheimer’s, MS, Huntington’s disease, and cerebral ischemia.

Now, tests haven’t shown that CBD can prevent these conditions. But in some cases, the anti-inflammatory properties can help prevent the onset of symptoms.

Arthritis Symptoms

We develop arthritis when the tissues in and around our joints deteriorate. Common symptoms include pain, stiffness, and loss of motion. The medications available to treat arthritis generally focus on relieving pain and improving joint function.

There isn’t enough evidence to recommend replacing arthritis medications with CBD, but it can supplement and further reduce arthritic symptoms.
